Tucked away, just off Bridge Street in St. Ives, is the charming, fashion boutique - La Muse. Lovely window vignettes, featuring ball gowns, evening wear, jewelry and other exquisite bits and pieces, distinguish La Muse, as being very different to the other shops of St. Ives.
I called in on La Muse's proprietor, Corrine Harwood-Davey, to find out more about this dreamy boutique.Corrine told me, that La Muse officially launched in 2003 and has been going strong ever since. Being a woman who knows the fashion business, she realised there was a potential niche market for ball gowns and prom dresses in St. Ives, when she had an overwhelming number of requests from customers.

Here's the lovely Astud Gilberto singing the eternally famous "Girl From Ipanema" I use to listen to this song when I was a young girl and it was considered to be very sophisticated for it's day. How about that Astrud ? She's a bit out of control with her emotions - eh ? Maybe the hair bow is too tight. I wonder if she's any relation to Bebel Gilberto ? Another songbird I love to listen to.
Do you recognize the the man playing sax ? It's Stan Getz, the famous jazz musician. I love this vintage video clip. Astrud is so phlegmatic and reserved, not even a wince of emotion.
This music clip is from the cheesy, 1964 movie { "Get Yourself a College Girl" } which stars Nancy Sinatra and some other names you may recognize. It's corny good fun ! By the way - Astrud flashes a smile at the very end of the song.

For the second time this year, I visited Oundle - an ancient, market village with splendid, olde world, Jurassic limestone buildings. The town is comfortably positioned near the River Nene and surrounded by flat, marshland fields which play host to a plethora of wildlife - a paradise of palettes, for artists and photographers. I like the fact that Oundle has very little of the typical high-street market chain type stores. The streets are clean and the buildings regal - a perfect place to shoot a BBC period drama. Here are a few photo memoirs of my day.
The black and white photograph of the cottage above, is the same as the one below. I like to play !!
These little busters were waiting faithfully for their mistress - right outside the local Oxfam shop.
I'm not sure if this building was a private residence or Council offices. I thought it very dignified.
A red door - The American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright - loved red doors and I love Frank !!
I loved this old stone wall with it's bits of moss, old wood door and the skyline of rooftops and chimneys.
Spring is blossoming in England - yippee !! Cheerful, yellow daffodils are springing up everywhere.
I took this photo from the car whilst driving past - a man, his two children, a wooden cart full of wicker baskets and a fabulous white horse, more interested in eating than pulling. I tried cropping the signs but the image lost it's scale - so I purposely left them in the scene. Transformed to black and white, except for the little girl's cap - which was red. The scene is somewhat charming - yes ??
The English fields are dotted white, with precious lambs - hopping about and springing straight up into the air. I wanted to take one home, they are too adorable !! I felt sorry for this Mother sheep, she had five newborns chasing her for a mouthful of lunch. The clumps lying all over the ground are sugar beets, left by the farmer - a source of energy and sustenance. No wonder those little lambs are so hyper - sugar beets !!

I was looking through some older photos recently and thought it would be fun to post these images from Crufts, taken in 2004. Serendipity !! I happened to look at the Crufts website last night and discovered the event begins today in Birmingham at the NEC, running until Sunday. It's a huge event, so if you abhor wading through crowds of people, then stay away from this event - it's jam-packed, chaotic and smells like dog pee. On the other hand, if you enjoy chockablock public events - dive in right in and embrace it !! Just be careful where you step.
I love puppy dogs - but am divided about this event as to whether it's a good thing for pooches. Whilst some dogs seem to enjoy being centre stage and relish performing in the limelight - I couldn't help but sense some misery as I walked around taking pictures. Lots of bored looks and heavy sighs. I'm not a dog whisperer, but I translated the canine sighs and vacant looks to mean - "Mommy - Daddy, can I go home now?" It is the opinion of some veterinarians - that dragging a dog to this event to perform, is sadistic.
The above photo - was the performance event for Australian Shepherds. It's incredible how well these lovely creatures heed commands. Unfortunately, I happened to sit in front of some very irritating American women who were up and down and up and down in their seats. Every time they got up or down, they would knock me in the back of the head with the huge handbags they were carrying. Not only that ! They spent the entire time talking on their mobiles to their husbands - who were golfing - and talking to each other. Very loud, bossy types. I begin to sigh like those unhappy little dogs and wished at that moment that I was home. Those American women were sadists. I wanted to tell them off but they were a lot bigger than me and I decided I would get the doggy doo knocked out of me - so I just sighed a lot instead.
If you can't be there in person, you can catch it on Crufts very first ever, live broadcast via the internet. How nice is that ?! No pushing through crowds, stepping in pee and doggy doo or getting knocked in the head by handbags. I can sit back comfortably with a bottle(s) of pear cider, a bag of crisps and cheer for my favourite canine. Woof, woof !!

When my daughters were very young, I held a job for many years as an office cleaner for a group of attorneys. It was good money and a bonus was, they gave me all the magazines from the waiting room lounge once they put out the next month's issue. Variety such as National Geographic, Architectural Digest and many wildlife and gardening digests. One article has stayed with me - a story about the impoverished people of Vietnam, telling all about how they scrimped, saved and recycled everything from food to a plastic bag. Yes - a plastic bag was precious commodity, they even bartered with it. I read that article some twenty years ago. I'm sure that plastic bags flow a plenty in Vietnam these days. I started on this topic today because I think plastic bags should be outlawed - I hate them !

No seagulls, swans, dogs, people or Buddhas were harmed in
the making of this blog, nor were they coerced into wearing the pointy hats.
The seagulls were a bit reluctant at first - but they eventually came around.

The dreaded day has arrived. This morning I woke up to an empty field. Naughty Boys were no where to be seen ! Either they were eaten by some Eastern Europeans or the farmer has taken them back to his farm. But since I've not noticed any people walking through the field with knife and fork in hand, I would hope it's the latter one.
The remark about Eastern Europeans may not seem kind or politically correct - it is how it is - here in United Kingdom. With the influx of Eastern Europeans to this country, vast amounts of fish are being netted from England's rivers and the Queen Mum's beloved swans, which are protected species, have been slaughtered and wings piled six feet high next to migrant camps, evidence of recent banquets.
What's next ? A Barbeque Swan Wings franchise next to the fish and chips shop ?
Although Eastern Europeans may be breaking UK laws, I empathize with them. My very own Grandparents, poor as church mice, emigrated to the US from Ukraine and with no strict laws against it, fished, shot and skinned anything edible to feed the their six children. It's no wonder then that the masses of buffalo disappeared from the prairie lands - mark and learn.
Enough of that, I'm here to blog about bovine, not use this as a platform for social and political beliefs.
So then, back to my cows.
I've always suspected Naughty Boys were girls but since I'm more city girl then country girl and know nothing about cows and cow bits and parts - I call them "boys." I believed the farmer to round them up around November time, not this soon ! No more waking up to see them queuing for turns on the scratching post, nor will I see them running full speed to huddle together, sheltering from the steady pouring of rain, beneath the row of trees just outside my window.
Hopefully, you will not think me too "barking mad" for posting cow photos and blogging about these critters.
Some might say that to be barking mad - is a good thing.
Cows, bless 'em, are messy, mucky creatures; bovine have a constant glob of gooey ooze from their eyes and they drool, slobbering a gelatinous slime that hangs from nose and mouth. They also chew with their mouth open, stink of poop, and have a fog of annoying flies that follow them everywhere. Cows eat and eat and poop and poop and poop ! Nevertheless, I love these critters ! Each one has a distinct personality, some days they can be playful and loving life and other days, grumpy and unsociable. Just like a typical British man.
But cows are more than just drooling, pooping fly catchers. They are highly intelligent, curious creatures. It's proven that cows are problem solvers and have incredibly long memories - never forgetting humans who have hurt them. They also interact in socially complex ways amongst their own, forging relationships that last forever or perhaps holding a grudge against another cow who has treated them unfairly. Like humans, cows are capable of learning lessons from each other, some are slow learners and others are very bright. It is said that a cow's intellect is matched closely to that of a dog and slightly above a cat's IQ - by a whisker. (bad pun)
No matter what you think or may not think about cows, I hope after reading the last paragraph, you might see them differently somehow and not merely as; cow + baked potato.
Goodbye Naughty Boys - I'm sure going to miss you !

I heard on my wifi radio this morning that Bettie Page, pin-up icon of the 1950's has lapsed into a coma after suffering a health setback. She has to be one of the most unique and identifiable sex kittens of her era with that trademark - shiny, raven black hair. I'm sure she's in her eighties now and for many years has lived an obscure and private life.
I also read an article about Columbian born author, Gabriel García Márquez - who was awarded a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. He has terminal cancer. I'm currently reading his novel "Love in the Time of Cholera." It's a wonderful book. I'm really sad to hear about his illness.
Sounds silly and weird - but when I heard the news about these two persons, it set me off navel-staring, thinking about my own legacy and what I might leave behind.
But then I remembered this lovely piece of literature penned by Emerson: "...to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded."
Two daughters, many gardens, I've played, laughed and sung with verve, I recycle my bottles and paper products, do volunteer work from time to time and hopefully, I've been a good friend and confidant to many persons.
Emerson reminds me, that I've done just fine - so far.
